A study of company annual reports and earnings call transcripts published in 2022 reveals that the Sentiment dipped during the year, in sync with trends visible from the OECD Business Confidence Index. Ukraine was among the key countries discussed, with growth in mentions, amidst geopolitical tensions. Mentions of Russia, Israel, the United States, and Brazil also increased. Singapore and India emerged as countries with positive sentiment.
Aerospace, Defense & Security (ADS), and Insurance industry sentiment was positive while the sentiment for Construction and Mining sectors remained flat. Amongst the themes, Carbon Capture Storage, Metaverse, and Cryptocurrencies were trending with high growth in mentions. Companies saw an increase in the share of macroeconomic-related risk mentions in risk discussions. Discussions around Inflation, Slowdown, Recession, Shortage, and Supply Chain also saw a rise.

- Company filings sentiment experienced a marginal decline compared to the previous year. Industrials and Financials bucked the trend with an uptick.
- Key Stats by Region – AR 2022: Europe, South & Central America-headquartered companies saw growth in both mentions and sentiment. Mentions increased for North American companies significantly, however, the sentiment remained flat. North American companies had more mentions of European countries in 2022.
- Trending Themes: Discussions around Inflation, Carbon Capture & Storage, Renewable Energy, and ESG were trending with high mentions and growth in 2022. Climate Change had the most positive sentiment growth in 2022. Cybersecurity among technology themes such as Cloud and Big Data with high mentions and growth.
- Trending Countries: Discussions around Ukraine trended due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and companies discussed implications on prices and supply chain. Sentiment around Ukraine and Russia dipped further in 2022.
- Macro Insights: Discussions around slowdown persisted in 2022 with company discussions including ramifications of geopolitical disruption on prices and costs.
- Risk Exposure: Liquidity, Supply Chain, Labor & Other Staffing, Regulatory & Compliance, and Inventory risk were trending in 2022, with an increased share of risk mentions.
- Company Initiatives: Discussions were around investments, growth, and product strategies amongst others. New product and product launch discussions declined in 2022 however the business sentiment was more positive.
